EUGEN 2005

EUGEN is the abbreviation for the 'EUropean GEology students Network'. The main goal of the EUGEN association is to organize annual meetings for students in geo-sciences all across europe.

The idea of EUGEN was born in the summer of 1995 during the national meeting of german geology students. The very first EUGEN-meeting that took on shape in 1996 turned out to be an instant success: about 150 students of earth-science related subjects from 18 universities located in 9 different european nations met in the Black Forest (SW Germany).

Since then, the EUGEN has happened every year, each time in a different part of europe. So far the meeting has happened in:

- Aveiro (Portugal, 1997),
- Transylvania (Romania, 1998),
- Sicily (Italy, 1999),
- the Sierra del Moncayo (Spain, 2000),
- the Plateliai national park (Lithuania, 2001),
- near the small city of Monschau in the region 'Eifel' (Germany, 2002),
- close to Triglav National Park near Kobarid (Slovenija, 2003)
- and Buses in the region of Tukums (Latvija, 2004).

In 2005 the EUGEN will take place in Croatia.

What do we do at an EUGEN-meeting?

The EUGEN-meeting takes place in august and lasts for one whole week. The program schedule usually contains three days reserved for geological fieldtrips, organized by the local hosts (students of geology) in league with their university professors and/or national geological survey.
One day is reserved for some sightseeing-trips to interesting local destinations. Talks and presentations from members of participating universities and supporting organizations are also part of the program. Last but not least the tradition calls for one afternoon to be dedicated to the famous 'Geolympix' - a team competition in highly entertainable fun-sport games.

Well, that is only the 'official' program schedule. Of course the main goal is to have a lot of fun, sit a lot around campfires having a drink and a little chat with colleagues from all over europe. So chances are set for aquiring international contacts that may even prove to be profitable in regard of professional and scientific exchange.

EUGEN stands for European Geology Students Network which is the famous annual meeting of geology students from all over Europe. This year the 10th European student week of geology will be organized by us ? the young geology enthusiasts from Croatia. EUGEN 2005 took place from 1st till 7th of August 2005. in the central part of Croatia.

The 10th edition of the EUGEN-meeting is to be taking place in Croatia. It will be held in the place called 'Lokve' located in the Golubinjak wood in western part of Gorski kotar (http://www.gorskikotar.hr/index-eng.htm). The region is mostly karstic and nearby can be found the Lokvarka cave and lake Lokve.
